Mother Fortune (MoFo) is an eclectic six-piece hip hop group based in Chicago whose funk, jazz, and soul influences drive their boisterous live sets, with vibes so good you’ll want to smack your mama–– or invite her to their next show. Made up of Shami and Moira, a dynamic rapper and vocalist duo, guitarist Jimmy, bassist Tyler, trombonist Mike and drummer Taskin, MoFo delivers everything from romantic lullabies to defiant, lyrical provocations. They promise to keep you on your toes with the quirky sensibilities of The Internet and Funkadelic-worthy breakdowns.
Ma, Don’t Look Back Cover by Chicago artist Oscar Joyo
Ma, Don’t Look Back is Mother Fortune’s third full release, tracking its evolution from electronic instrumentation to bombastic live performances, and represents a new iteration of the band’s supercharged sound. Their recent single, “You Know” was featured by curators at These Days Mag and local CHIRP radio. Recorded on the southside of Chicago at Echo Mill Studios and produced by Jiadi Tang and Boxed Ookami, the EP crash-landed on all streaming platforms June 13th, 2024.
Mother Fortune was originally conceived by Shami in 2018, who envisioned the project as part otherworldly band, part artist co-op. Since then, Mother Fortune has expanded, collaborating with numerous Chicago artists and bands. The namesake, “Mother Fortune” is the band’s pink-haired patron saint and guiding spiritual force, featured beautifully by local artist Oscar Joyo on the newest EP cover. The release of Ma, Don’t Look Back coincided with an epic performance at the California Clipper, where they were joined by queer, post-grunge duo ORISUN and multi-talented singerand DJ Icey Bby.
